Susan's studio workshops are a wonderful and complete experience. Susan shares her methods and techniques that will allow you to create a magical 'Naturalistic Realism'. Her philosophy is not only to show you 'how' - but to teach you to understand 'why'. Susan nurtures her students - extends them so when they leave her workshops, they feel as if they have grown in skill, observation and inspiration - ready to take on almost any subject...
..."My philosophy in teaching is not a 'step by step' method. I teach 'why'. I want my students to leave my workshops with a good understanding of the reasons behind my methods and techniques. To really understand not only WHAT happens when you use particular methods - but WHY it happens - and this opens a whole new world of  creativity, versatility and possibility.
For beginner's - a little experience in watercolour and drawing will be an advantage. We will divide our paper up into sections and work on several small studies which aid in understanding watercolour and it's properties - how to tame it and use it to express emotion, atmosphere and create a naturalistic realism. My goal is to have my students leave with the courage to ‘think out of the square’ and to understand how to adapt the methods and techniques I will show them so they can create almost any subject. Most of all they will have a good appreciation and understanding of how to give their paintings a true three dimensional 'presence'.
The workshop focuses on extending artists to take their work to the next level and above.  I spend a great deal of one on one time with each artist so the workshops are tailored to suit each artist's needs. The workshops are relaxed and full of all the hints, tips, shortcuts and learning that I wish I had access to many years ago!
I teach the things I needed to know at different stages in my watercolour journey  - all of the things that have been a revelation to me and the things that have made the difference in my work - the things that have helped me the most. I combine those things with the questions I am always asked.
Then I formulate studies that will demonstrate everything I know.
The workshop will focus on subject matter that encompasses all of my methods and techniques including backgrounds. We always have a fun time.
A number of students return each time as they have had so much fun on the previous workshop series. I ask that artists bring along paintings or photographs of work they have done and would like a critique on on the last day. Or if anyone is having problems with a piece they have been working on at home - I am happy to offer suggestions to help. It is a relaxed
and very very informative time.
Also, each workshop focuses on extending artists to the level they wish to be. Once again, I spend a great deal of one on one time with each artist and extend them at a rate each is comfortable.
We will spend some time on the intricacies of creating paintings that really 'speak to the viewers' and remain in their memories long after the viewers have left the presence of the work.
These are the things that set our work apart. Knowing the tricks and how to fine tune a painting is key to the success of the piece. We have a fun and relaxed time that is full of learning. I like to think that when artists leave my workshops, they feel so inspired and full of enthusiasm and new knowledge that they feel they are ready to fly.
